What a house sitter needs to know

Getting in and locking up

Which doors to use, any sticky locks, and your routine for locking up at night. Share door and alarm codes in person rather than on paper.

The weekly rhythm

Trash and recycling day (and when bins go to the curb), mail and package handling, and plants that need water. These are the things that pile up and get noticed by neighbors.

Comfort settings

Thermostat preferences, Wi-Fi, how the TV remote works, and where extra towels and linens are.

If something breaks

Where the water shut-off and breaker box are, and the number of a plumber or handyman you trust. A burst pipe is a 15-minute problem if your sitter can find the valve — and a very expensive one if they can't.

Pets, if you have them

Feeding, walks and vet info — the sheet includes a pet section automatically.

Tip: tell a trusted neighbor that you have a house sitter, and put that neighbor's number on the sheet. It helps everyone feel at ease.

Questions

Should I write my alarm code on the sheet?

We recommend sharing door and alarm codes in person instead of on a printed or shared sheet.

Is it free?

Yes. The core sheet is free to fill in, print and share. The Full Kit adds “If something breaks”, a daily schedule, and “Where to find things”.
